PLUMSTED TOWNSHIP – This year’s Relay for Life will deliver a 1-2 punch in the fight against
Cancer. Even though Friday nights over night Relay Event was canceled because of rain, the
Relay Ceremony went on as planned.
The Relay Event has been rescheduled for Sunday June 8 from 12 noon to 7 PM at the Indian
Rock Campground, 920 West Veterans Highway in Jackson.
Friday’s Ceremony was moved inside the New Egypt High School. While the change may have
required some last minute logistic maneuvers, the night was one to remember, organizers said.
“It was a little bit of a challenge,” Relay Chairperson Anita Pfefferkorn said Monday. “We never
really expected it to rain, we were being optimistic, but I think it was a huge success.”
It was standing room only in the NEHS gym, as community members joined together to make
their voices heard.
Pfefferkorn said organizers used the night to drive home the Spirit of the American Cancer
Society’s war against the dreaded disease. “We Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back!’
Pfefferkorn said. “We celebrate survivorship and the advances in medical care that make it
possible, we remember those we’ve lost, and we look at ways to fight back against cancer.
Rememberance and Celebration lit up the NEHS gym Friday night with the traditional Luminaria
Ceremony. Each Luminaria bag was decorated to celebrate the life of loved ones who battled
cancer.
